Al-Ma’idah (The Table)

5-20

The Jews are again reminded about the favours of Allah (SWT) on them and ordered to enter Jerusalem, but they were afraid of the strength of the people residing there, therefore this land was forbidden to them for 40 years.

He said, “”My Fosterer! I do not have control except on myself and my brother, so effect separation between us and the transgressing people.””

And recite to them the true story of the two sons of Adam, when they both offered an offering, but it was accepted from one of them and was not accepted from the other (who) said, “”I will definitely kill you.”” (The other) said, “”Allah accepts only from those who guard (against evil), (P 5

The dispute of the two sons of Adam (PBH) is narrated. This seems to be the first fulfillment of the announcement of Allah (SWT) made while sending Adam and his wife (PBH) out of the garden, “Go down! Some of you will be the enemies of others” 2:36. It also appears that it was the first human death, that too by murder. The natural manner of disposing off the dead body was to bury it in the ground as demonstrated through a crow. Had the murdered son lived, the human population would have been more, it is probably due to this reason that it is stated that murdering one person is as good as murdering all human beings and saving the life of one person is as good as saving the lives of all human beings.

5-29

I intend that you should bear my sin as well as your own sin so that you should be among the inhabitants of hell and that is the reward of the unjust.””

So his soul willed for him, the murder of his brother, he thus killed him and thereby became one of the losers.

For that reason, We prescribed for the children of Israel that whoever kills anyone without (it being a killing of the murderer of) someone, or due to corruption in the earth, then it will be as if he killed all human beings; and whoever saves a life then it will be as if he saved the lives of all human beings. And Our messengers had come to them with clear proofs, then even after that many of them are committers of excesses in the earth.

5-33

The only reward of those who wage a war against Allah and His messenger and strive in the earth (to cause) corruption (in it), is that they should be murdered or crucified or their hands and feet should be cut off from opposite sides or they should be sent on exile from the land. That is their disgrace in the world, and in the hereafter there is a great punishment for them,

A list of punishments for those who wage a war against Allah (SWT) and His messenger (PBH) is given along with the permission to exempt in case they repent.

5-34

except those who repent before you overpower them*, so know that Allah is Protectively Forgiving, Merciful. (R 5) [* Catch them for punishment]

“Same to Verse No.33”

5-35

If the second ‘Waw’ in this verse is taken as explanatory then ‘Seeking the means of approach (Wasiila)’ would mean ‘Striving in the way of Allah (SWT) so as to be successful.

5-36

As for those who do not believe, even if all that is in the earth were theirs and the like of it with it*, to give as ransom for the punishment on the day of resurrection, it will certainly not be accepted from them and for them there will be a painful punishment. * Double

Nothing will be accepted from the infidels as ransom for escaping punishment. Does hell resemble a Black hole’ from which nothing can come out?

5-37

They will intend to come out of the fire but they will not be able to come out of it and for them there will be a lasting punishment.

“Same to Verse No.36”

5-38

And the male thief and the female thief, cut off their hands, a reward for that which they earned, an exemplary punishment from Allah, and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Cutting off of the hand of a thief is to make others too fear such punishment, so that the society should be free of crime. Allah (SWT) forgives him who repents and amends, out of His mercy because He can do whatever He wills being the King and having power over everything.

5-39

But whoever repents after his injustice and amends, then Allah will turn to him (mercifully), Allah is certainly Protectively Forgiving, Merciful.
