Indeed there was a sign for you in the meeting of the two groups (at the battle of Badr) {1}, one party fighting in the way of Allah and the others were infidels. They saw twice their numbers (with) the sight of the eye (that is, it was not imagination) and Allah strengthens with His help whom He wills. In this there is certainly a lesson for those who have insight.
(Year H.2) A caravan of non-Muslims of Makkah, from where Muslims had to flee to Madina, was returning from Syria. When the Makkans came to know that this caravan might be pursued by the Muslims from Madina, they inarched with a strong army of 1,000 men to save the caravan. Muslims who were only 313 were ordered to meet the army from Makkah at Badr and not the caravan. Muslims fought so bravely that the non-Muslims, though thrice their number, were defeated and many of them killed. This raised the prestige of the Muslims all over. The special feature of this battle was the less number of Muslims, which proves that victory depends on Allah’s help and not on numbers.
