“It is stated in the Quran: He (Allah) created the skies and the earth in six periods “7:54. The word ‘yawm’ plural of which is ‘Ayyaam’ translated as ‘periods’ is used to mean a normal day 62:9, number of days 54:19, and also 1000 years 22:47, 32:5 and 50,000 years. 70:4. i.e. the duration in ‘yawm’ is not fixed. The material constituting the universe, according to science, was created in a very small fraction of time. This material must have been measured out after estimation and allotted for making each individual heavenly body that was to come into existence and this process along with the evolution of the heavenly bodies to take their present form appears to have taken six periods which may differ in duration form one another, i.e. all the six days might not have been equal. The smokey stage of the Universe was probably chaotic which was set in equilibrium and organized into seven layers or systems of heavenly bodies in two periods, probably corresponding to the 5th and 6th periods during which the earth too was made suitable for human life. The earth is about 5 billion years old whereas the universe is about 15 billion years old, therefore all the 4 Geological Eras could be located in the last period of the6 periods of creation of the skies and the earth. In a lamp some fuel burns to give light and heat, this word has been used to explain that in stars too a fuel burns i.e. hydrogen burns to give light and heat. By using the word ‘Masabih’ the mechanism by which stars emit light has been explained.”
