(It was) Allah (Who) had helped you in many battle fields. And on the day of (the battle of) Hunian {1} your number which made you feel exalted, did not help you in any way and the earth, inspite of its being spacious, became constrained on you, then you turned back retreating.

This battle was fought in 8H at Hunain 25 Km East of Makkah. Muslims were more than ten thousand compared to the enemy, the tribes of Hawazin and Thaqeef who were four thousand. The large number of Muslims led them to vanity with the result that they first took to flight, but later they were helped by Allah (SWT), as in early battles, and the enemy finally surrendered. Muslims were more in number yet they faced initial defeat which again establishes that victory does not depend on numbers but it depends on the help of Allah (SWT).
Battle of Hunain (H. 8):

This battle was fought at a place about 3 miles from Makkah. In this battle, Muslims were more than ten thousand and outnumbered the enemy, the tribes of Hawazin and Saqeef being 4,000. The large number of Muslims led them to vanity with the result that they at first look to flight, but later the enemy surrendered. Contrary to Badr, in this battle Muslims were more yet they initially faced defeat, this again establishes that victory does not depend on numbers but it depends on Allah’s help.

The entry of the polytheists in the Sacred Mosque was banned. The fulfillment of the promise of enrichment can be seen by anyone who visits Makkah.

Fight with those who do not believe in Allah and in the period hereafter nor do they make unlawful that which Allah and His messenger have made unlawful nor do they adopt as their religion, the religion of truth (Islam), from among those who were given the book, till they pay by hand the jizya * and they (accept that they) are in a subdued state. (R 4) [* Tax taken from non-Muslims in an Islamic state for providing them full protection.]

Muslims were ordered to fight with those of the Owners of the book who did not accept Islam till they were subdued and paid the ‘Jizya’ – a tax taken from non – Muslims in an Islamic state for providing them full protection.

9-30

And the Jews say, “”Uzair is the son of Allah,”” and the Christians say, “”The Messiah is the son of Allah.”” That is their saying with their mouths, they imitate the saying of those who did not believe earlier, may Allah destroy them, how they are turned away (from the truth)!

The Jews, the Christians and the infidels wrongfully ascribe sons to Allah (SWT) Who is free and above all this and consider their priests, monks and Isa (PBH) as their fosterers although they were ordered to serve only one God (Allah SWT) without associating any partners with Him. They also worked against Islam but Allah (SWT) will make Islam prevail over all religions.

9-31

They have taken their priests and monks as their fosterers besides Allah and (also) the Messiah, the son of Maryam; and they were not commanded (anything) except to serve one God. There is no god except Him, be He glorified above that which they associate as partners (with Him).

They intend to put out the light of Allah with their mouths, but Allah will not allow anything except that His light should be perfected, though the infidels dislike.

He it is who sent His messenger with guidance and the true religion (Islam) that He may make it prevail over all religions though the polytheists may dislike.(P 9

9-34

There are many so called religious leaders who do not guide people towards the Quran and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammed (PBH). They take money from them in the name of Islam but put it to personal use. This wealth which they had sinfully acquired and hoarded will be heated in the fire of hell and with it their bodies will be heated at different places as punishment. This may also refer to people who hoard money and do not spend it in the way of Allah.

9-35

on the day it will be heated up in the fire of hell, then their foreheads and their sides and their backs will be branded with it. (It will be said to them), “”This is what you hoarded for yourselves so taste (the punishment of) that which you hoarded.””

9-36

The number of months with Allah is certainly twelve months (in a year) in the ordinance of Allah (since) the day He created the skies and the earth, of them four are sacred (during which fighting is prohibited). That is the established law, so do not be unjust to yourselves concerning them. And fight the polytheists all together as they fight with you all together and know that Allah is certainly with those who guard (against evil).

There are twelve months in a year, four of which Zul qaad, Zul haj, Muharram and Rajab are sacred in which fighting is prohibited and which should not be postponed.

9-37

Postponement (of a sacred month) is only an increase in infidelity through which are misled those who do not believe; they make it lawful one year and unlawful (another) year, that they may make up the number of months which Allah has made unlawful (for fighting). Thus they make lawful what Allah has made unlawful. The evil of their deeds is made fair seeming to them and Allah does not guide a people who are infidels. (R 5)

O you who believe! what is (the matter) with you, that when it is said to you to go out in the way of Allah (to Tabuk) {2}, you cling heavily to the earth. Are you more pleased with the life of this world compared to the hereafter? Then the provision of the life of this world compared to the hereafter is but little.

These verses refer to the expedition of Tabuk in 9H undertaken to face the strong forces of the Roman Emperor. There were many hindrances for the Muslims:
1. Great drought
2. The long distance of the journey
3. Ripening of fruits which were ready for harvest
4. Hot weather and
5. Organised strong Roman army. The Prophet (PBH) led an army of 30,000 Muslims and reached the borders of Syria but the enemy did not turn up. Nevertheless, there were other conquests
Expedition of Tabuk (H. 9):

There were many hindrances for the raising of an army sufficient to face the strong forces of the Roman Emperor.

1. Great drought.
2. The length of the journey to the confines of Syria.
3. Ripening of the fruits which were ready to be plucked.
4. Hot weather and
5. Organised Roman army.

The prophet (PBH) led an army of 30,000 Muslims which reached the borders of Syria, but the enemy surrendered without war.

9-39

If you do not go forth He will punish you with a painful punishment and will bring in your place a people other that you, and you cannot harm Him in anyway as Allah has power over everything.

If you do not help him (Muhammed), then Allah helped him when those who did not believe sent him out (of Mecca, he being the) second of the two when they were both in the cave {3}, when he said to his companion (Abu Bakar), “”Do not grieve, Allah is certainly with us.”” So Allah sent down His tranquility over him and strengthened him with forces which you did not see, and made lowest the word of those who did not believe; and the word of Allah, that is the highest; and Allah is Mighty, Wise.

During the journey from Makkah to Madina, Prophet Muhammed (PBH) and his companion and friend Abu Bakr (R.A) took refuge in the cave of the Mount Sawr about 5 Km from Makkah. His enemies came in search of him right upto the cave but a spider had spun a web on the entrance of the cave and a pair of pigeons had built a nest and laid eggs, these two sights misled the enemies and they went away. This is how Allah (SWT) miraculously saved His messenger (PBH).
During the journey from Makkah to Madina, Prophet Muhammed (PBH) and Hazrath Abu Bakr took refuge in the cave of the Mount Sawr about 3 miles from Makkah. A serpent stung the heel of Hazrath Abu Bakr while he was closing the holes inside the cave. He tried to bear the pain but his tears fell on the face of the prophet (PBH) and awakened him, on learning the reason he rubbed the spot with his saliva and that cured the sting. A spider spans a web on the entrance of the cave and a pair of pigeons built a nest and laid eggs. His enemies came in search of him right upto the cave but the spider’s web and the pigeon’s nest misled them and they went away.
