Al-Baqarah (The Cow)

2-80

And they say, “”The fire will not touch us except for a counted number of days.”” Say, “”Have you made an agreement with Allah? Then Allah never goes against His agreement. Or do you say about Allah that which you do not know?””

2-83

Allah (SWT) had taken a pledge from the Bani Israel (Chapter: 2 Verses: 40 and 63) that they should not serve (worship) anyone other than Allah, be good to parents, relatives and orphans, speak to people in a nice manner, establish worship (Salat), give charity (zakat), not shed blood and not drive out people from their houses unlawfully, but they broke the pledge although they had agreed to abide by it. Therefore, their reward was disgrace in this life and punishment in the life after death. They preferred the life of this World to the life after death therefore their punishment will neither be reduced nor will they be helped.

2-84

And when We took a pledge from you, “”Do not shed blood (among) yourselves and do not drive out your people from your houses, “”then you agreed to this while you (yourselves) were witnesses.

“Same as Verse No. 83”

2-85

Then you are the persons who kill your own people and drive out a party of your people from their houses, supporting one another against them, in sin and transgression, and if they come to you as captives, you ransom them, whereas their very driving out was unlawful for you. Do you then believe in one part of the book and reject the other part? Then what is the reward of one who does like that among you, except disgrace in the life of this world? And on the day of resurrection (The rising of the dead for judgment of deeds and subsequent reward or punishment) they will be sent towards a severe punishment, and Allah is not unaware of what you do.

“Same as Verse No. 83”

2-86

Those are the persons who purchase the life of this world at the cost of the (life) of the hereafter, so their punishment will not be lightened nor will they be helped. (R 10)

2-87

Musa (PBH) was sent to Bani Israel with the Torah containing the code of conduct for them. Then many messengers of Allah came to them after him, the last in the Israeli lineage being Isa (PBH) who was strengthened with Jibreel (PBH) and given the Injeel. He too performed miracles which were proofs of his prophet hood. Whenever Allah (SWT) sent messengers to them they either proudly rejected them or even killed them just because their messages were against their desires. The reason they gave for their disbelief was that their hearts had a covering which prevented Allah’s message from entering them. Allah (SWT) replies to this statement of theirs that their disbelief was because of His curse on them due to their rejection of the truth.

2-88

And (they) say,””Our hearts are coverings,”” No! Allah has cursed them because of their infidelity, so little it is that they believe.

“Same as Verse No. 87”

2-89

And when there came to them a book from Allah confirming that which is with them, though earlier they were seeking a victory over those who did not believe, but when there came to them that which they have recognized, they rejected it, so the curse of Allah is on the infidels.

“Bani Israel used to caution the infidels that the last messenger of Allah, Muhammed (PBH) is to come. But when he actually came and they even recognised him they rebelled against him because he was not from the Israel lineage as they had expected and was from the Ismaeli lineage, though the Quran revealed to him confirmed the Divine origin of the book sent to them i.e. the Torah, the Zuboor and the Injeel. Selecting a human being for conveying the message of Allah (SWT) to mankind is His choice and no one has any say in it. They were oppressed that Muhammed (PBH) was not of their choice and their rejection of the message and messenger of Allah was a bad deal. On being invited to believe in the Quran they claimed that they believed in their books i.e. they need not believe in any new Divine book. They are therefore questioned as to why they had killed the prophets earlier if they had really believed in the Divine books with them. On account of these faults of theirs, they became deserving of the curse, anger and the consequent punishment from Allah (SWT).”

2-90

Evil is that for which they sell themselves, by rejecting that which Allah has sent down, being oppressed that Allah sends down from His grace (the book) on whom He wills from among His servants. Therefore they became deserving of anger upon anger, and for the infidels there is a disgraceful punishment.

“Same as Verse No. 89”

2-91

And when it is said to them, “”Believe in that which Allah has sent down,”” they say, “”We believe in that which was sent down upon us.”” And they do not believe in that which comes after it, though it is the truth, confirming that which is with them. Say, “”Then why did you kill the prophets of Allah earlier, if you were believers?””

“Same as Verse No. 89”

2-92

“Bani Israel are again reminded that Musa (PBH) had come to their predessor with clear proofs of his prophethood in the form of miracles and Allah (SWT) had directly taken a pledge from them raising the mountain over them as another miracle, even then they had arrogantly declared that they did hear the message but they would disobey. Because of this infidelity of theirs they were made to get inclined towards the worship of the calf. They are informed that if they claim to be believers then their belief is enjoining something that is evil and not good and beneficial.”

2-93

And when We took a pledge from you and raised the mountain above you (saying), “”Hold with strength that which We have given you and listen.”” They said, “”We hear and we disobey.”” And they were made to drink into their hearts (the worship of) the calf because of their infidelity. Say, “”Evil is that which your belief enjoins you, if you are believers.””

“Same as Verse No. 92”

2-94

“It was the claim of the Jews that only they would go to paradise and life in paradise is definitely more comfortable than the life in this world. Therefore Allah (SWT) is challenging them to desire for death so as to go paradise if they are truthful in their claim. At the same time, He declares that they would never desire for death because of their evil deeds of which they are conscious and which would actually land them in hell. He further reveals that they and the polytheists, contrary to desiring death, are greediest among human beings for long lives wishing to live even for 1000 years. But living for longer periods i.e. pushing death further away in time, if possible, cannot cancel their punishment for the evils they did, because Allah (SWT) being the Knower of the seen and the unseen, knows all that they had done including their injustices.”

2-95

And they will never desire for it because of that which their hands have sent before. And Allah knows those who are unjust.

“Same as Verse No. 94”

2-96

And you will definitely find them the greediest among human beings for life and (also) among those who associate partners with Allah (The polytheists – Mushrikeen), each one of them loves that he should be granted to live for thousand years, but to live (so long) would by no means remove him from the punishment, and Allah is the Seer of what they do. (R 11)

2-97

Say, “”Whoever is an enemy of Jibreel, because he brought the (Quranic revelation) down on your heart by the order of Allah, confirming those (earlier books) which were before it, and (as) a guidance and good news for the believers,

Jews had enemity with Jibreel (PBH) probably because they thought that he had brought down the Quran on the heart of Prophet Muhammed (PBH) on his own accord, not selecting any persons from Bani Israel. In their jealousy, anger and disappointment they were ignoring the fact that the Quran was not contradicting their book, but was actually certifying that the original Torah, the Zabur and the Injeel revealed to Musa, Dawood and Isa (PBT) respectively were of Divine origin. Besides the Quran guides to the straight path leading to, and gives good news of, paradise to those who believe in and follow it. Therefore, there is no sense in anyone being offended by it or its revelation to Prophet Muhammed (PBH) because Allah (SWT) had selected him as the last messenger for communicating His final message to humanity and not Jibreel (PBH) who along with Mikaeel and all other angels and messengers of Allah just obey Allah’s orders therefore Allah (SWT) declares that He is an enemy of the infidels who are His enemies and enemies of Jibreel, Mikaeel, His angels and His messengers (PBT).

2-98

“Same as Verse No. 97”

2-99

“Allah (SWT) states that the Quran confirms the earlier Divine books and contains clear statements but the transgressors do not believe in it. The Jews had earlier agreed to believe in the last messenger of Allah and anticipating his arrival they had come and settled at Madinah but a party from among them did not honor this agreement, and cast the Quran behind their backs as if they did not know what this book was.”
