Al-Ma’idah (The Table)

5-80

You see many of them turning (in friendship) towards those who do not believe, evil is that which their souls have sent forth for them, (because of) that Allah is displeased with them and they will stay in the punishment.

The reason for Bani Israel being cursed by Dawood and Isa (PBT) and their punishment by Allah (SWT) are given.

You will definitely find the strongest in enemity among human beings, to those who believe, (to be) the Jews and those who are polytheists; and you will definitely find the nearest in love to those who believe, (to be) those who say, “”We are Christians,”” that is because, among them are priests and monks and they do not consider themselves great. (P 6)

Jews and Polytheists are the strongest enemies of Muslims and nearest in love are Christians because they have humble priests and monks among them.

5-83

And when they hear that which is sent down to the messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of their recognition of the truth. They say, “”Our Fosterer! we believe, so write us down with those who bear witness.

These priests and monks weep when they listen to the Quran. Allah (SWT) has rewarded them with paradise for their acceptance of the Quran as a truth from Allah (SWT) but those who reject it will be in hell.

5-84

And what (reason) do we have that we should not believe in Allah and in the truth that has come to us? And we hope that our Fosterer will make us enter with the righteous people.””

O you who believe! do not make unlawful, the good things which Allah has made lawful for you and do not exceed the limits, Allah certainly does not like those who exceed the limits.

We are not to make unlawful that which Allah (SWT) has made lawful. Instructions are given to believers regarding food and oaths. Intoxicants, games of chance, idols, drawing lots are forbidden. Some of the reasons for prohibiting intoxicants and games of chance are that the devil tries to cause enemity between human beings through these items, (for instance everyone tries to take away the money of others), turns them away from the remembrance of Allah (SWT) and Salat. The social evils associated with alcohol are well known. Brain damage is as common as cirrhosis of the lever in drunkards. There is no sin on believers in what they ate in ignorance when they later on restrained from evil and did righteous works.

5-89

Allah will not catch you for that which is vain (unintentional) in your oaths, but He will catch you for the oaths with which you are earnestly tied up. Then for its expiation (so as to wipe off the ill effect of breaking such deliberate oaths you should) feed ten poor persons with the normal food with which you feed your own people or clothe them or set free a slave, but whoever does not find (the means to do any of the above three) then he should fast for three days. That is for the expiation of your oaths when you have sworn, but guard your oaths. Thus Allah makes clear to you His signs that you may be grateful.

O you who believe! intoxicants and games of chance and stones (set up around Kaaba for sacrificing animals, idols) and divining arrows * are only an uncleanliness from the devils work, so avoid it that you may be successful {2} [* Casting lots with arrows ]

Intoxicants:

The social and financial evils associated with alcohol and drugs are well known. Clinically manifest brain damage, in its various forms, associated with prolonged hazardous consumption of alcohol is about as common as alcoholic cirrhosis. Among those who drink hazardously there will be found a spectrum of cerebral function ranging from complete normality to utter derangement. In the case of the individual patient with alcohol related brain damage, the disturbance may be so severe that he or she is unable to function effectively as an independent being. There is no sin on those who believe and do righteous works in what they ate (in ignorance), when they (later) restrained (themselves from prohibited food) and believed and did righteous works, then restrained (themselves from evil) and again believed, then restrained (themselves from evil) and did good works and Allah likes the doers of good. (R 12)

O you who believe! Allah will definitely test you some what in respect of the game (Hunting animals) which your hands and your spears can reach, that Allah may know (mark out) him who fears Him without having seen Him; so whoever exceeds the limits after that, then for him there is a painful punishment.

Hunting is prohibited while in the pilgrim’s dress, except the game of the sea.

5-95

O you who believe! do not kill the game while you are in the pilgrims dress, and whoever among you kills it intentionally, then the compensation (as fine for it) the like of what he killed of the cattle, decided by two just persons from among you, to be brought to Kaaba as an offering; or the expiation (of it) is the feeding of the poor or the equivalent of that is fasting, that he may taste the evil consequence of his affair (of disobedience). Allah has pardoned that which was done in the past but whoever returns (to it), Allah will inflict retribution on him, and Allah is Mighty, Inflicter of retribution.

Allah has made the Kaaba, the Sacred House, an establishment for human beings, and (also) the sacred month and the offerings and the victims with garlands, that is so, that you may know that Allah knows whatever is in the skies and whatever is in the earth and that Allah is the Knower of everything (Omniscient).

Allah (SWT) has made the Kaaba a Sacred House, Zul Haj is sacred month for performing the Haj and also the offerings and the victims with garlands. He alone knows why he has done this because He alone knows everything.

5-98

Know that Allah is severe in requiting (evil) and (also) that Allah is Protectively Forgiving, Merciful.

Allah (SWT) on one side is Severe in requiting evil and on the other side He is Protectively Forgiving and Merciful.

5-99

Nothing (is incumbent) on the messenger except the conveyance (of the message) and Allah knows that which you expose and that which you hide.

The duty of the messenger is just to communicate the message of Allah (SWT) and not to keep an account of deeds, it is Allah (SWT) who does this 13:40 because He knows that which is exposed as well as that which is hidden.
